A model roof from Unilin Systems for the Model Home 2020 project

Structural insulated roof panels from Unilin Systems are playing a part in the future of zero carbon home design, having been chosen by VELUX for their CarbonLight Homes, part of the Model Home 2020 project.

Famed for outstanding thermal performance, Unilin Systems roof panels provided the ideal material for the two, three and four bedroom semi-detached properties in Rothwell, Kettering. Paramount to the design of the CarbonLight Homes is that they promote the health and well being of occupants, are attractive places to live, and are easy to replicate for housebuilders.

Unilin Systems’ structural insulated roof panels combine the thermal benefits of PIR foam with the structural integrity of factory made systems to produce a roof structure that has a high thermal efficiency and is quick to install. For the CarbonLight Homes project, Unilin Systems supplied Unispan HPIR OSB boards in a 18/2 205 specification. Overall 235mm thick, the sandwich panels featured 205mm of PIR foam between a 12mm top panel and 18mm bottom panel to meet the high standards requested by VELUX for the CarbonLight Homes. Such is the performance of the panels that Unilin Systems were one of the few panel manufacturers that could achieve the required U value of 0.11W/m2K.

The roof structure was designed and installed by Roofspace Solutions, one of the UK’s leading MMC roof supply and fit companies that is pioneering the use of SIPs in roof structures.

The VELUX Model Home 2020 project involves the design and construction of six energy efficient buildings in five countries in Europe.

The two CarbonLight Homes were designed by HTA Architects to achieve Level 5 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, with each house achieving a 70% on-site reduction in CO2 emissions, and the remaining 30% offset through allowable solutions. The CarbonLight Homes won the Innovation Award for Building Technology at the British Home Awards 2010.
