Getting the Pitch Just Right

As a regular follower of a professional football team and having seen some of the pictures taken during the relaying of the pitch in the close season, it is easy to understand just what a complex operation this is. One company that has been doing this type of work for nearly 30 years is Hunts Contractors of Marton in Lincolnshire.

However as Chairman David Hunt explains, “We do far more than just football pitches. I have had almost 30 years experience in the construction and land drainage sectors. We aim to provide a quality service from design to hand over. The company has expanded over the last 10 years and is now equipped with the latest plant and equipment, maintaining and operating a modern fleet and undertaking a diverse range of works. Today it offers a complete “one-stop -shop” solution for all of a client’s requirements.

Hunts can provide natural and synthetic turf pitches, athletics tracks, tennis courts playgrounds – in fact pretty much any kind of leisure facility. When it comes to natural turf Hunts Contractors will undertake top soil stripping, laser levelling, drainage and sand slitting, seeding or turfing (all with low ground pressure machinery). This combined with our expertise in laser guided asphalt surfacing, kerbing, fencing and floodlighting infrastructure will produce a precise surface for natural or synthetic pitches used by amateurs or professionals. When it comes to synthetic turf pitches and multi-use games areas, Hunts have been involved in the design and construction of all types of surface. Managing Director Shaun Drury has over 10 years in the industry and is always up to date with the latest innovations, he says “knowing what’s happening at the cutting edge gives the client an opportunity for the best value for money and hopefully gives us a competitive lead”.

Hunts have worked on many prestigious projects including Glasgow Rangers, Don Valley Stadium, Lord’s Cricket Ground, Hibernian FC and many more,

With regards to athletics facilities for stadiums, schools and academies, Hunts can provide a complete service for running tracks, throwing cages and circles, long jump pits and run-ups and pole vault slip trays. The public sector is also an important part of the industry for Hunts Contractors who have constructed skateboard parks, playgrounds, public open spaces and land reclamation, some as far away as Poland.

Finally its skills extend far further than this for it also carries out macadam surfacing, civil engineering, deep drainage (this is one area where they are well known for their knowledge and experience), bulk earthworks, laser grading, hard and soft landscaping, ground stabilisation and small building works. In these markets Hunts Contractors are well known for getting the job done!

Among the many successful projects we have completed are the construction of three new natural turf rugby pitches along with a major surface water drainage system for the whole complex and a 3G synthetic rugby pitch with floodlights and fencing for Leeds RUFC. Total reconstruction of the pitches at Fulham FC’s Craven Cottage and Doncaster Rover’s Keepmoat stadium. A full size 3G pitch with floodlighting, fencing and associated car parks and paths for Kirk Hallam Community College. Construction of MUGA’s for Aberystwyth University and Kirk Hallam Council. All earthworks, drainage, services roads etc for the first distillery to be built in Scotland on a Greenfield site for 40 years.
