Parkhead Housing Association (PHA) was established in July 1977 as one of Scotland’s first community based housing associations. From its first acquisition in 1977, it now has as stock of almost 1400 of new and refurbished properties for rent in the east end of Glasgow.
The Association is based in Helenvale Street right at the heart of its community, and has a strong track record of first class customer service and investment in the local area, as well as equally strong plans for the future, which will form part of the overall legacy framework following the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
For over three decades PHA has had a strong reputation for delivering high quality developments for rent, sale and shared ownership, with an ongoing and varied development and regeneration plan including new build and refurbishment.
One recent and highly successful development has been at Duke Street, where a former Mecca Bingo Hall / Granada Cinema has been converted into 25 new flats in the centre of Parkhead, and is ideally placed to make the most of the local facilities.
Duke Street runs to the East End of Glasgow from the High Street in the City Centre, through the residential district of Dennistoun, running past The Forge Shopping Centre, before terminating at a junction with the Great Eastern Road (now the Gallowgate and Tollcross Road), Westmuir Street and Springfield Road, to form a turreted Edwardian five-way junction at Parkhead Cross.
There are 21 amenity flats in the development, each with a wet floor shower, with the larger six-storey block being serviced by a lift. The smaller four-storey block has four amenity flats and four mainstream. There is a mix of two-bed and three-bed properties.
The flats were designed to achieve the current Eco Homes ‘Very Good’ award. This means that the properties are built with the environment in mind, and also have great insulation properties which will make it easier and cheaper to heat the flats.
The comprehensive refurbishment of the 16 flats at 52-64 Helenvale Street started on the 23rd August 2010. This property is a Grade C Listed Building constructed around 1902. Externally, the buildings are good examples of late traditional red sandstone tenements with hints of art nouveau and Arts and Crafts design in their styling.
The improvement works include renewing bathrooms and kitchens, adapting areas to form a new mix of accommodation, new heating, electrical and plumbing installations, structural repairs, stone repairs, new roof coverings, upgrading common closes, renewing mains services, external works, drainage and works in general including external repairs and improvements.
There are 16 flats between the two properties. 52 Helenvale Street will provide eight two-bed, three person flats, while 62 Helenvale will provide the Association with eight fully refurbished one-bed, two-person flats. It is hoped that work will be complete in June 2011.
PHA’s tenants are at the heart of everything it does, and the Association is proud of its record in involving them in all our operations. For further information, visit www.parkheadha.org.uk.
