Promoting SIPS Technology

The UK Structural Insulated Panel Association (UK SIPS) is the authoritative voice of the industry and is committed to rigorous standards of quality and service, resulting in a professional benchmark for the SIP industry.

Open to all organisations involved with or interested in SIP technology, UK SIPS has a broad ranging membership, including not only the key SIP manufacturers, but also industry suppliers and professionals involved with design and construction using SIP technology. Membership is also open to trade associations and other recognised bodies with links to the SIP industry.

UK SIPS engages with those issues and requirements that are most pertinent to the effective promotion and exploitation of SIP construction methods, such as promoting exemplar SIP construction projects; facilitating communication and knowledge transfer of SIP techniques; promoting the development of education and training on SIP technology to increase levels of professional and technical awareness of what quality SIP construction methods can offer; engaging with technical or other impediments to the effective utilisation of SIP construction methods; collaborating with organisations that have a shared ambition to work in support of a better more effective construction industry; engaging with Government and major public sector clients and decision takers; and safeguarding the interests of members and ensuring that the growth of SIP technology is controlled in a structured manner.

UK SIPS members have successfully completed a wide range of projects using SIPS technology across a variety of sectors, with an excellent case-in-point being the provision of integrated structural insulated panels in order to help provide a high performance school
of the future.

Hemsec SIPs were used to create the whole structure of this school, Inman’s Primary School, Hedon, near Hull. The use of Hemsec structural insulated panels allowed the engineers to do away with 70 per cent of the structural steelwork in creating the structure for this primary school. The client, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and their main contractor, George Houlton & Son, needed a modern, thermally efficient structure providing fast build speed, exceptional sustainability credentials and minimal site waste at a competitive price.

Hemsec SIPs worked with its approved contractor Hemsec Installations to deliver this project. Hemsec structural insulated panels were used for the external and internal load bearing walls. In a number of areas primary structural steel elements were incorporated within the Hemsec SIPs. Structural insulated panels were also used to create the pitched and flat roof areas for the whole building. External finishes included traditional brickwork, insulated renders, single ply finishes, and cedar cladding and green roof build up.
