Rural Homes for Modern Living

Ask any planner and they will tell you that many timber frame houses are poorly designed and are inappropriate for Scotland’s landscape. However, one company offers a range of fantastic homes designed specifically for the countryside.

That company is Hebridean Contemporary Homes (Heb Homes), set up in 2004 by twins Neil and Alasdair Stephen with business partner DJ MacLennan. Having started the architecture practice Dualchas Building design several years before, they were expert in designing homes for the Highland landscape and knew there was a business opportunity.

Alasdair says, “We realised that if we could offer our best Dualchas designs in kit form, we could meet what appeared to be an increasing demand. We were inundated by people asking us for houses the same as previous designs. That’s when we decided to set up Hebridean Contemporary Homes.

“Our designs are inspired by the simplicity of the blackhouse and by agricultural buildings, but are very much modern and of their time. From the outside, the simple forms fit readily into the sloping topography of the Highlands and are therefore loved by planners. Internally they are spacious, open plan, and architecturally delightful. The double height spaces and walls of glazing give them a real contemporary feel. As architects we are restricted by distance. However as soon as we launched our kit houses, we began to receive orders from much further afield. In fact we receive enquiries from all over the world.”

As well as the longhouses Heb Homes also supply the larger TH and UH house range. These reflect the form of the traditional farmsteading and are large, luxurious and very popular. The WH range is based on the traditional whitehouses of rural Scotland. Unlike some kit suppliers who produce a pastiche of this house style, the architects have been careful to keep the classical proportions that makes these houses so beautiful.

Heb Homes can supply their full range of designs in either timber or SIP (Structural Insulated Panel) panels. Both products are of a very high standard with exceptional

U-values and air tightness being achieved. SIP has the added advantage of being very quick to erect. It is also ideal for modern renewable heating systems.

Company Director Neil Stephen says, “We have been very successful with these designs. Already we have them installed and built throughout Scotland and expect to expand into Ireland and Europe. Part of our plan is to offer kitchen, bathroom, heating and smart-house packages. We are also now offering turn-key services with affiliated contractors. As a design led company we are always seeking to improve the quality and range of our product and see exciting times ahead. These new products and services will be launched with our outstanding new website later this summer.

“Hebridean Homes, in conjunction with our sister company Dualchas Building Design, are in a unique position in being able to offer a complete service, from locating a site, planning the design, getting the necessary planning permission etc right through to construction and fitting out. Our aim is to take the worry out of building a dream home”
