There’s More to a Surface than Meets the Eye!

It’s becoming a sad fact of life that more and more surfaces in public places are in need of treatment, either to prevent them being used as a tableau for graffiti artists or to prevent people from slipping and taking advantage of an increasingly litigious society. One company that has built an extremely successful reputation for its work in these areas is JSE Contract Services of Arnold, Nottinghamshire.

Kevin O’Brien, managing director, is proud to expand on this work. “Although we are only a small company, we have many years experience in the business, for example I have been involved in surface treatment now for over 27 years. Over the last two years we have been extensively involved in the refurbishment of the Broad Marsh bus station in Nottingham. This work came about as the direct result of a recommendation from an engineer in another part of the Council but now, we have been working there for over two years and are now talking to the Council about further ongoing work.”

The bus station has been undergoing a major facelift and JSE’s first work there was to treat all of the public waiting areas with an anti-graffiti coating in bright colours to totally freshen up the area, including walls, ceiling and even the seating. In parallel with this, another contractor installed new lighting. This has not only considerably improved the appearance of the public waiting area but it has also made it considerably easier to keep clean. Should any graffiti be applied, it can be readily removed by spraying with a simple graffiti remover and wiping clean. The next job was to treat the public waiting area flooring – about 2,000-3,000m2 – with an anti-slip coating. The existing floor comprised paving slabs in various states of repair. These were treated with a decorative and flexible coating to create a uniform colour. Finally, the seating has been painted with anti-graffiti paint system in the bus station’s colours to match existing new seating.

Kevin says, “So successful has this work been that we are now starting to work on the car park above the bus station as a direct result from the fantastic feedback we received from the bus station management and members of the public etc. The first job was to coat the stairwells and the areas outside the lifts with an anti-graffiti coating. For us, the last two years has seen a lot of work coming from the Nottingham area but we continue to carry out work all over the country. The work has been extremely varied, for example, we are currently refurbishing two squash courts for Nottingham City Council sanding floors and applying specialist coatings to the playing surfaces, using English Squash and Racket Ball Association approved coatings, we have also applied anti-graffiti coatings to an ice-rink in Sheffield where the toilets were constantly being covered in graffiti and we have treated a number of stations on the Tyne Metro in Newcastle using our unique ‘moisture reactive’ anti-slip system, including the station at the Airport. In contrast, we have also carried out hygienic coating work in the some areas of Burton’s Foods in Blackpool as well as our continued work for Sainsbury’s stores nationwide. As a result, we are now helping Tesco’s with their slip issues. These have been five very busy years but very successful ones and we are very positive about the future.”
