A part of the Waagner Biro Holding Group, an Austrian enterprise based in Vienna with global expertise in steel construction and mechanical engineering, Waagner Biro Gulf LLC has proven itself to be an indispensable partner for a wide range of discerning clients throughout the world. Today, the Waagner Biro Group has over 1000 employees in 14 locations across Europe, Asia and in the Middle East.
Able to trace its roots back to 1854, Waagner Biro’s name is linked to all of the great infrastructure projects in Austria, and to many more on the international stage. In actual fact, it has been working in the Gulf region since 1967, when it undertook the construction of the Al Maqta Bridge in Abu Dhabi.
Numerous other successes followed, including the first cable stayed pedestrian bridge in the UAE connecting the Zabeel Parks, in Dubai, in 2004, and the Floating Bridge, a 360m long road bridge with six lanes (one of the biggest floating bridges in the world) across Dubai Creek; an AED 154m project that was completed in only eight months. In addition, the company has completed the first and second widening on the Al Maktoum Bridge in 2003 and 2007 respectively, and it even completed a 160m long pedestrian bridge across Khaleej Al Arabi Road for ADNEC (Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre) in just 73 days! This latter project is particularly impressive because of its superstructure: a three dimensionally curved steel box girder with a one sided cantilevering walkway, which is fully glazed from one side.
As a turnkey contractor and facility manager of any kind of bridges, steel structures, marine works and wastewater treatment plants, Waagner Biro Gulf offers clients extensive in-house design, manufacturing and installation capabilities.
Working with leading architectural practices such as Foster + Partners on the British Museum in London and the Reichstag parliament building in Berlin, the Waagner Biro Group has shown its expertise and professionalism on projects throughout the world. In the Gulf, Waagner Biro Gulf has successfully completed important projects such as aforementioned bridges and in marine engineering, Al Ghubaiba Water Transport Station, a station for ferries, water taxis, waterbuses and service boats at Dubai Creek in 2011 (inaugurated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum together with the opening of the METRO Green Line) and the construction of the Reporting Wharf, which was built in order to facilitate the berthing of 67m long cargo vessels at Dubai Creek Entrance, also in 2011. The Gulf region has, of course, become celebrated for its architectural style and design excellence, and Waagner Biro’s forward-looking approach and commitment to innovation has proven an inspiration to others in the field.
Waagner Biro Gulf, with its head office in Dubai, has two subsidiaries, one in Abu Dhabi and one in Doha (Qatar), and runs four dedicated divisions: (1) bridge engineering (including steel engineering), (2) marine & coastal engineering, (3) water & environmental engineering, (4) maintenance & facility management. It continues to push back boundaries in design and manufacture too, and is currently working on several important and prestigious projects.
Through incessant innovation and commitment to exceptional quality, value and professionalism, Waagner Biro Gulf will maintain and enhance its reputation as a leader in the industry, while consistently striving to exceed its clients’ expectations. With this in mind, the company has recently welcomed on-board a new CEO (Peter Brechtelsbauer) and several new divisional directors: Norbert Hartlieb (Director Marine & Coastal Engineering); Karl Brandstaetter (Deputy Director Marine & Coastal Engineering); Georg Ebner (Director Bridge Engineering); Nilesh Stegmayer (Director Maintenance & Facility Management); Stan Wehbe (Sales Director Water & Environmental Engineering); and Nicolas Tsimas (Director Technical Support & Strategic Development). This fresh injection of talent will strengthen the company as it moves forward, giving it the impetus to continue to grow and expand.
Waagner Biro Gulf is a very different kind of company. It is progressive and innovative, but with very deep roots.
Its clients choose to work with the company because it stands apart from the rest.
