Birtley Building Products Ltd, which was established in 1965, is a member of the midlands -based Hill & Smith Holdings Group which operates globally with products covering a vast range of industries.
Birtley Building Products occupies a twelve acre site based under the watchful gaze of the “Angel of the North” in Gateshead and runs a “three-core” business operation on the site.
Its galvanizing plant, which is one of the most modern in Europe, galvanises Birtley’s steel lintel range in addition to contract galvanizing products used across a whole range of industries from ship building to agriculture, and is seen as a market-leading galvanizing business.
Birtley is one of the three leading steel lintel manufacturers with a major market share and with a unique product offering in that it is the only company producing a post-galvanized lintel product, ensuring that it has much greater corrosion protection than any of it’s competitors.
In 2000 Birtley Building Products acquired the residential door business of PC Henderson and embarked upon the manufacture, selling, and marketing of its steel and GRP composite door range.
In the intervening period Birtley has continued to develop its door product offering, and now boasts a range second to none in the industry. It has steel and GRP composite door sets in a range of frames including softwood, hardwood, PVC, and eco frames. It has established itself as a market leading supplier with significant shares of the volume builder market and an increasing share of the housing refurbishment sector along with supplying product into the general building market through the builders merchants sector. It has enjoyed steady year-on-year growth, despite the recession of the past four years, and is confident, again, of increasing its volumes in 2012 and beyond.
Birtley is committed to continuous investment, development, and product improvement and their portfolio includes Secure by Design (SBD; Pas 23 and Pas24) and they aim to achieve ISO 14001 Environmental standard, by the end of this year.
