Emma Sturgess-Lief started The House Surgery in July 2003 after working for several years successfully managing the lettings department of a busy London estate agent. During her career Emma advised many property vendors and landlords on how to refurbish, present and dress their properties for sale or let to achieve maximum appeal and profit, with excellent results.
After purchasing her first investment property in 2001, Emma beautifully renovated and refurbished it at reasonable cost, and quickly made a £40,000 clear profit! It was during this time Emma decided to formally gain an interior design qualification as a foundation to pursue a more creative career and fulfil her dream of starting her own business.
Since then The House Surgery has grown into a hugely successful operation and has been called in to cure the property ills of some of London’s most fashionable addresses. However, the close-knit team of experienced creative and building staff still retains the personal touch of a boutique agency, a key feature Emma is keen to protect.
Her attention to detail and demand for high quality from her team of builders demonstrates her specialisation in making reasonably low cost renovations look first class.
In 2005 Emma realised the growing demand for furniture hire services as many of her clients needed a short term solution to dressing their finished properties beautifully. Hence, Show Home Designers, The House Surgery’s sister company was born, Show Home Designers specialise in high end show home design, although they still cover most budgets. The furniture and accessories can be hired or purchased and include all the little extras to give that all out ‘wow’ factor on completion of every project.
The House Surgery offers a multitude of house doctoring and furniture hire services to suit many different individual needs. A recent project in Roehampton illustrates the scope of services that The House Surgery team can deliver.
“This large six-bedroom property had been let to a family who unfortunately left it in a very sad state,” says Emma. “It was also in need of a general updating and refurbishment, so we were employed by the owner to get it ready for sale. We installed new bathrooms and kitchen, carpets and flooring, lighting and complete redecoration as well as dressing with furniture, soft furnishings, paintings etc.”
What sets The House Surgery apart from many other interior-decorating firms is its high-end furniture hire service. “We have a large stock of classic, contemporary furniture which suits the kind of bespoke, exclusive projects we work on. These can also be purchased, which we often advise in cases of multiple house projects as it works out more economical for the property developer.”
The style and uniqueness of what Emma and her team create ensure a steady stream of repeat business, which looks set to continue. “I am currently looking for larger premises in order to house our ever growing supply of furniture – and I hope to take on more staff in the near future to meet the demand for our services.”
