INTERSERVE AWARDS fifth OFF-SITE CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT TO YORKON

Off-site construction specialist Yorkon has been awarded its fifth contract in the healthcare sector by Interserve Construction. The project is also Yorkon’s second scheme at Harrogate District Hospital.

This latest ProCure21 project is to provide a maxillofacial unit to treat patients requiring correction for conditions to the head, neck, face and jaws. The off-site approach will cut the time on site to just two months, significantly reducing any disruption to the hospital and the programme time in order to have the facility up and running as soon as possible.

Designed by AFL Architects, the single-storey building is being craned into position in only two days using a 350-tonne crane as this is a highly constrained site enclosed on three sides. This operation has been timed for a weekend to further minimise disruption to patient services.

The steel-framed modules will arrive on site complete with first fix mechanical and electrical services, partitions, doors and windows. The facility will accommodate three maxillofacial treatment rooms, one consulting/examination room, reception, waiting area, storage and offices. It will be partially brick-clad and linked to the main hospital ‘street’.The building has also been designed by Yorkon to accommodate an additional storey should the Trust have a requirement to expand the unit to meet future local needs.

Commenting on the choice of off-site construction, Shaun Paramor, Commercial Manager at Interserve Construction, said, “The Yorkon approach will provide us with the quality and speed of construction that the Trust needs. By moving work off-site and into the factory, the building will arrive on site virtually complete – radically reducing the programme time and any disruption to patient services. This is a key point given the proximity of the existing hospital buildings to the site.”

This project follows Yorkon’s completion with Interserve of a challenging scheme to extend an existing traditionally-built two-storey building at Harrogate District Hospital by adding another storey. The off-site solution removed the need for decanting the ward below and overcame the issue of severely restricted site access.

Yorkon has an extensive track record in the healthcare sector, having completed a wide variety of bespoke modular building projects including ward extensions, self-contained theatre blocks, emergency care units, haemodialysis centres, offices, community clinics, and complete hospitals, delivering all the advantages of off-site construction.

Yorkon is part of the Portakabin Group.
