Superglass sets a new standard in Acoustic Party Wall Solutions

Superglass’ two new Robust Details make for a more cost-effective solution for masonry wall construction. ‘Party Wall Roll’ provides confidence for the house builders that Parts E & L of the building regulations are met and Simplifies the procurement process for the house builder.

Take a party wall system that makes getting the job done easier, add unique features to enhance construction performance whilst cutting down hassle on-site and put that together with full Robust Detail approval. Superglass Insulation Ltd, the only independent manufacturer of glasswool insulation in the UK, has done just that by successfully completing all the necessary steps in securing two exciting new Robust Details for masonry wall construction with its unique ‘Party Wall Roll’ product.

Until now there have been restrictions on the options available to architects and house builders when specifying acoustic insulation for cavities in separating walls, some of which include expensive plasterboards, time consuming parge systems and wet trades.  Not only is there the need for compliance with Part E (England and Wales) or Section 6 (Scotland) but there is also the requirement to comply with Part L (England and Wales) and Section 6 (Scotland) of the Buildings Regulations in reducing the thermal bypass in party walls. Superglass’ Party Wall Roll product is a glass mineral fibre quilt which can be used in many of the existing systems detailed in the Robust Detail Handbook.  By the very nature of its composition, Party Wall Roll has excellent acoustic, thermal and fire properties and, as it is manufactured from over 80% recycled glass bottles, it has excellent sustainable credentials.

Superglass recognised there was a need to provide solutions which make life on-site easier for the builder.  The result of this has been two new Robust Details which will be available in the May edition of the Robust Details handbook. The advantage of these systems is to allow the builder to bring only one block on site, with the same block used for the external wall also being used for the party wall. This saves time in the procurement process, reduces waste on-site and eases the construction process.

The first is for use with lightweight aggregate blocks and the second, a brand new wall solution for unparged aircrete blockwork for use in thin joint or standard mortar with all aircrete masonry products. These new Robust Details (RD) are:

E-WM-22 – Superglass Party Wall Roll installed between two unparged leaves of 100mm lightweight aggregate masonry; 12.5mm dot and dab dry lining on each side using performance plasterboard.

E-WM-23 – Superglass Party Wall Roll installed between two unparged leaves of 100mm aircrete masonry; 12.5mm standard plasterboard on dabs. In addition to only requiring an aircrete block,      E-WM-23 simplifies the process even further by using standard plasterboard as the wall finish.  Unlike other fully-filled unparged Robust Details, E-WM-23 does not require the use of costly performance plasterboards, standard 8kg/m2 plasterboard completes this ground breaking Robust Detail solution. One block, one plasterboard on site and worthy of note is that this RD system also performs whether built off strip, traditional or RD Approved raft foundations.

Both RDs are available for registration in England and Wales with Robust Detail Limited from the beginning of May 2012 and have been awarded three credits under the Code for Sustainable Homes.

One block and one plasterboard now mean Superglass provides the number one solution for house builders and party walls.
