New Multi-Utility NCO programme promotes skills over qualifications

The UK’s leading independent technical training provider launches new “Multi-Utility” Gas and Water NCO programme to provide a multi-skilled workforce for the Utilities Industry.

Develop Training (www.developtraining.co.uk) is set to become one of the first technical training providers to offer a new and bespoke Multi-Utility NCO (National Construction Operations) qualification in Gas and Water. The programme, which is designed to support the training needs of self-lay organisations and SME’s, is part of Develop Trainings drive to help create a sustainable multi-skilled utilities workforce for the future.

By covering the core skills and competencies required to work on both Gas and Water distribution networks, this new programme will give employers and their workforce more flexibility and the increased ability to meet their contractual requirements whether working with a Gas or Water client.

The new Multi-Utility programme is part of a wider range of Gas and Water NCO’s delivered by Develop Training. Over the last 5 years, the company has trained over 5,500 individuals via the NCO and other routes, from companies operating in the utilities industry, such as Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions, Skanska, Morrison Utility Solutions, tRIIO and Forefront Utilities.

Forefront Utilities said “We would like to thank Develop Training for their support regarding the recent NCO1 course.  The trainer was helpful and friendly which made the new starters feel at ease. They have not been in this industry before and are not aware of the dangers or work that lies ahead of them. The trainer gave them all of the information and also additional guidance when they requested it”

Programmes are available from levels 1 to 3 in mains and service laying, covering a range of Gas and Water disciplines. The NVQ route can be used to give new and existing workers the skills and competencies require for them to do their job well, and do it safely, whether they are a junior member of the team or a supervisor. Develop Training also have a number of solutions designed to help you create the correct attitudes in the workplace and improve health and safety awareness as well as management development.

John Kerr, Operations Director, at Develop Training said “We are proud to have supported our clients with their quest to develop a skilled and competent workforce over the last five years and are excited to launch the new multi-utility programme. Our new and existing NCO programmes are designed to build a flexible workforce and will also help to fill the current skills shortages in the Utility Industry, which requires the recruitment of 200,000 staff in to the sector by 2023.”

Develop Training have a successful partnership model working with large and small employers. Putting skills before qualifications is at the heart of the solutions provided to customers, which begins with an assessment of an individual’s training needs against the relevant skills and competencies held at the core of the role they undertake. This information is then used to build a training plan for each individual. Develop Training endeavour to make our training a worthwhile investment for our learners and their employers rather than an unnecessary cost.
