First Wessex makes six-figure investment in worker health and safety

Hampshire-based housing association, First Wessex is investing significantly in worker health and safety and customer care with a six-figure deal for more than 4,400 Hilti power tools.

The registered social landlord, which manages and maintains 20,500 high-quality, affordable homes in the region, and develops over 300 new properties every year, made the decision to partner with the global manufacturer to the construction industry based on several key factors, including productivity and cost effectiveness.

The tools, which will be used by First Wessex’s 450-strong building and maintenance teams, were selected by the workforce themselves following open days at depots in Aldershot, Eastleigh and Portsmouth, allowing each specialised unit to choose exactly the right tools for their trade.

Particular emphasis was placed on health and safety, with a product selector provided to ensure they remain under hand-arm vibration (HAVS) levels, and training and equipment – including specialist vacuum and on-tool extraction systems – to address harmful construction dust.

The contract has been procured using the Hilti Fleet Management service, whereby a fixed monthly charge covers all servicing and repair costs including reporting, transport, labour, spare parts and theft coverage. This provides First Wessex with peace of mind and cost visibility.

Every order is placed online and tools are labelled with the name and location of the owner, who then must sign for the items on delivery which provides traceability and increases product ownership. Hilti tool inserts, such as drill bits, chisels and cutting discs, are also ordered to allow the teams to benefit from complete Hilti systems.

Hazel Warwick, Asset Management Director at First Wessex, said: “We are committed to our staff and investing in our residents’ homes and futures. Our new partnership with Hilti underlines these commitments.

“We want to work with suppliers that will help us to deliver the best service to our residents at the best possible cost. Hilti very much meets this brief both in terms of the safety and durability of its tools, as well as the cost effectiveness of the Fleet Management service.”

Shaun Booty, Government Account Manager at Hilti, added: “We have worked with First Wessex for some time but this new deal marks a major step forward in our relationship. Both worker health and safety and customer care are critical to the organisation, and we are delighted to offer solutions which meet both objectives.”
