Labour and time on site can be reduced by weeks by getting someone else to do much of the work- for the same material cost.
Protan is now able to supply rolls of material ready welded, in its state-of-the art factory. It is the only single ply membrane manufacturer offering the capability to UK roofing contractors. Yet the prefabricated system is cost-competitive with ‘standard’ membrane material, which still has to have on-site welding factored into the cost.
Studies show that Protan’s innovative prefabricated roof process can cut welding by up to 70%: on a typical 10000m2 roof, equivalent to 60 hours’ LESS labour. The only fixing work required on site is along the edges and abutments, and detail round penetrations etc. Penetrations such as ‘Mansafe’ anchor points, rooflights and vents can even be supplied to individual order pre ‘flashed’ with Protan SE membrane to further minimise labour.
Richmond Roofing used Protan’s prefabricated system on a small (2500m2) roof: “We saved a good week on site,” verified Richmond project manager Lawrence Miller.
Factory fabrication also reduces reliance on quality workmanship, ensuring seams are properly welded across their entire length, avoiding risk of water and/or weather penetration. The factory welding also ensures seams are executed in ideal conditions, further reinforcing their performance over 30+ years’ on the roof.
Protan uses its own, specially developed software to calculate the quantity of material required to cover the roof, with minimal waste. Membrane rolls are produced to individual requirement. Comments Protan managing director Fraser Maitland, “Going the prefabricated route protects contractors’ profit margins and helps them optimise value whilst delivering a superior performance. One client ordered smaller rolls for perceived ease of laying on the roof, but has now switched to rolls as large as we can produce them, because he gains even more on-site time saving in labour. As he says, the crane is there anyway to manoeuvre materials onto the roof.”
