Artistic Roof for Tate Britain

Sika Liquid Plastics has provided a Decothane Delta 25 system to coat the lead rotunda roof at the renowned Tate Britain gallery in London – a particularly complex project due to the difficult detailing over the existing lead rolls.

Tate Britain is the oldest of the Tate’s galleries and first opened in 1897. The current roof had been in place for many years and had begun to deteriorate, leading to the need to install a new waterproofing system. The key requirements for the project were that the waterproofing could be installed whilst the building was in use, that it would be heat tolerant and capable of dealing with high levels of movement.

“Decothane Delta 25 is the ideal solution for this type of project,” comments Steve Leech, National Sales Manager at Sika Liquid Plastics, “Its liquid application means it can be easily applied over all complex detail areas when compared to a traditional sheet material, and the finished look is very similar to that of the original lead allowing the building to maintain its aesthetic appearance.”

The Sika Liquid Plastics system is also completely cold applied, allowing works to be safely completed whilst the building was in use without causing any risk of fire from hot works. Decothane cures to form a completely seamless membrane free from any potentially weak areas such as joints and seams, once installed it meets the highest fire ratings available for a roof system and is guaranteed for 25 years.

“The Tate Britain are a highly regarded and prestigious client of ours,” adds Michael Flazon, Director at M C Designers Ltd. “We wanted to make sure we offered them the most premium and beneficial solution for carrying out their roofing works. The roof area itself is highly detailed and therefore needed a specialised product; Decothane was the best solution due to its ease of application around the detail areas and the highly aesthetic finish of the completed project.”
