Britaniacrest turns rubbish into profits

Britaniacrest Recycling is a family business, formed in 1993 by Ray Foss to provide an affordable and professional skip hire and waste management service for private and commercial customers. son, Richard Foss, is in fact the third generation of the family to be involved in waste management.

By utilising the relatively new concepts of recycling at the time of its formation, Britaniacrest has grown from strength to strength to become one of the South’s leading private waste management companies.
External operations range from transport of bulk waste and recyclables for local authorities and waste service providers to tipper trucks, grab loaders, skips and containers for the construction industry, commerce and householders.

No waste is taken directly to landfill. All collected material is taken to their licensed waste recycling facility at Hookwood, near Gatwick Airport. Here all ‘waste streams’ are mechanically sorted to extract materials for the paper, board making, wood fibre, glass and plastics industries. By using their on-site crushing facility at Hookwood they also supply quality approved recycled aggregates.
By using their on-site crushers, shredders and screeners quality approved secondary aggregates and compost is produced.

Britaniacrest is fully aware of the demand to avoid landfill and by 2009 had achieved an overall diversion from landfill of 84% by weight. Since new machinery was installed in 2009, some materials are now considered as a waste derived fuel and are sent for energy recover driving up the recycling/recovery rate beyond 90%. In fact, when requested, they can provide a Zero% landfill service to environmentally conscious clients.

An innovative company, Britaniacrest always ensures the most sustainable and cost effective treatment for its customers’ waste, constantly reviewing technology and markets.

Their operations cover the area from South London to the south coast. Keeping the territory relatively close to their Gatwick headquarters is important to Richard, who is keen to keep down mileage. The 15-acre Gatwick site is one of the largest waste recycling sites in the UK and has an annual turnover of over £10million. It is licensed to manage 250,000 tonnes of waste material per year, which keeps the firm’s 56-strong workforce busy.

Richard puts the company’s success down to its family structure. “Because the directors are family members we are all accountable and committed to the growth of the business and our workforce,” says Richard.

“We also have a wealth of knowledge and expertise in waste management between us and can make decisions quickly to ensure we can keep our business healthy.”

The waste recycling market is fairly buoyant says Richard, and they are in a particularly fortunate position in that when one part of the market slows down another part usually increases demand and fills that gap.

But they’re not about to rest on their laurels, “Plans for the future include moving in to the field of processing and treatment of domestic waste,” says Richard. “We are currently looking at a potential site to develop this new arm of the business. We are also very interested in setting up our own waste to energy plant, as this really is the way forward in waste recycling.”
