Located in Bridgend, West Lothian and only 10 minutes from the M9 and M8 junctions Gordon Connor is ideally placed to meet haulage operations from small to large organisation. Operating mostly throughout the central belt of Scotland but capable of operating on a larger wider scale as well, they carry a variety of goods which has made them a successful company.
Starting off as a coal merchant the company transformed into a haulage company in 1993 when the coal trade went in to decline, with owner Gordon buying his first vehicle, a second-hand Scania 10-tonne Tipper in 1995. Initially the company started work with West Lothian District Council, supplying material for cemeteries in and around the district 2-3 days a week, but once they found their feet they started contacting quarry companies. The first firm that took them on, Pioneer was a supplier of hard rock and tarmaccadam, and was later bought out by Hanson, who kept on Gordon Connor Haulage.
“In 2000 we purchased our first brand new vehicle, a Scania 6×2 mid-lift axel – the first of its kind in the UK. We started to expand in 2003 buying a Scania 6×2 rear-lift axel and in 2006 a third vehicle, a Scania 6×2. All three had to be kept in Hanson livery, until they sold out three years ago. They’re in our own colours now.”
Now working for Tillicoultry Quarries (who took over all Hanson quarries), Gordon Connor also works for CEMEX, Tarmac and Bardon Aggregates. The company also supplies local builders merchants with mono block and quarry materials and carries out small tarmac work, driveways etc.
“By law every Haulage company driver must have completed 35 hours of CDC training by 2015, and then every 5 years. We have completed ours way ahead of the deadline. Many other companies haven’t taken it seriously, so I imagine there will be a rush towards 2015. We did our training at the weekends, so we didn’t lose any work during the week, as we are a small company. It was my thinking that it’s better to get it over and done with quickly.”
According to Gordon business probably better now than it ever has been. “We’re probably in a better position now than when we were with Hanson exclusively. It’s better working for a number of companies. When one is quiet another is busy so the workload balances out nicely.”
