Crossrail team take on new challenge

A team from London’s Crossrail project are the latest to sign up for the CARE Construction Challenge.

The challenge,  for teams from across every level of the construction industry, will see each participant take on a marathon distance on foot, bike and kayak while raising vital funds to support CARE International. The charity’s poverty-fighting work includes constructing emergency and transitional shelter in humanitarian emergencies. The event takes place on 30th June on Dorset’s scenic Purbeck peninsula.

The Crossrail team, made up of employees from Network Rail and Bechtel,  joins teams from BAM Nuttall, EnterpriseMouchel, Kingspan and others, including teams from NCE. The teams will take on a marathon by foot, bike and kayak, with additional mystery challenges. Last year BAM Nuttall completed the challenge in the fastest time. The Crossrail team are determined to give them a run for their money this year.

Team leader Geoff Hancox, Senior Project Engineer, said: “We saw the event advertised, and we thought we can beat BAM Nuttall to the trophy!”
The team are currently working on the Crossrail Surface Works West of London, from Paddington to Maidenhead. Their group consists of Project Managers, Engineers, Planners and Commercial who are all looking forward to working together as an integrated team in a bid to win.

Hancox explained the decision to take part: “CARE International responds to humanitarian emergencies with, amongst other forms of assistance, emergency and transitional shelter, permanent housing and infrastructure. Network Rail provides critical national infrastructure. We know that humanitarian emergencies need the skills of civil engineers and construction people like us to help alleviate suffering. So the fact that CARE’s work resonates with us as a team was a big factor in us signing up.”

The Crossrail team plan to train together on occasional lunchtimes as well as fundraise together. They are planning a charity cricket match between themselves and their suppliers to raise funds and help kick start their training.
