New sector director role boosts offering to the utility services sector

The multidisciplinary design and engineering firm, Morgan Sindall Professional Services, has appointed Alwyn Hanekom to the newly created role of Sector Director for Utility Services to develop the company’s growing portfolio of work in the utilities sector.

Hanekom joined Morgan Sindall Professional Services as a principal engineer from Balfour Beatty in 2012, having specialised in the design and delivery of extra high voltage (EHV) cable transmission projects.

His notable past projects include the cable installation for the Croydon Tunnel, the largest installation of its kind in the UK, and the installation of two 400kV circuits in the Woodhead Tunnels. He is also the youngest of just 21 UK engineers to have qualified for TP141 Design Verification for cables, which allows holders to sign off high voltage cable system designs for National Grid.

Richard Webster, Managing Director for Morgan Sindall Professional Services, says that Alwyn’s experience and qualifications will be a further boost to the company’s utility credentials: “This new role, coupled with Alwyn’s technical knowledge and wealth of practical experience, will help us to provide dedicated sector support,” he adds, “and we look forward to developing and growing our portfolio of work across the sector.”

With offices in Manchester, London, Glasgow, Stratford-upon-Avon and Switzerland, Morgan Sindall Professional Services has a wide client base and works across diverse sectors including utilities, alternative energy, aviation, rail, industrial and manufacturing, life sciences and chemicals.

The company specialises in the design of buildings and infrastructure in controlled and secure environments. It has had a strong year, winning notable contracts including 132kV cabling contracts at Stoke Bardolph, Winson Green and Sparkbrook and, a number of civil design and cable verification projects for the EAC National Grid partnership.
