Safety in UK rail

The UK has one of the safest rail networks in Europe, but further improvements are always needed.

The latest health and safety report from the Office of Rail Regulation shows that in 2013 there was a notable 6.4% reduction in the overall mainline system safety risk and evidence of a “continuing improvement” to mainline workforce safety.

Snap-on Industrial (UK) launches bespoke e-Learning course to improve safety while working with tools at height

Snap-on Industrial UK, the tooling and workshop equipment solutions specialist has launched a bespoke e-Learning course to help drive awareness of the dangers of working with tools at height.

According to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) a third of fatal injuries to workers were from falls from height, with half of fatal falls taking place in the construction industry1. A further quarter of major injuries were caused by being struck by a moving object; 14 deaths were attributed to being struck by an object.

US hardwood lumber and veneer exports to the MENA region top USD 45.05 million in the first half of 2013

USD 45.05M of American hardwood lumber and veneer were exported to the MENA region including Pakistan during the first six months of this year, according to the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), the leading international trade association for the American hardwood industry. This marks a 4% increase over the same period in 2012. Of this total, exports of American hardwood lumber reached a value of USD 31.29M and a volume of 45,676 cubic meters, marking an increase of 0.5% and 3% respectively over the January to June period of 2012. Direct shipments of US hardwood veneers to the MENA region during the period reached a total value of USD 13.76m, rising by 14% from the same period last year. In addition, US hardwood log exports to the MENA region reached a value of USD 14m and a volume of 26,653 cubic meters during the same time period.
