Gold medal for UK construction industry

The spectacular London 2012 Olympic Torch is but a smouldering memory, however the public’s appreciation for the UK construction and engineering industry showcase that is the Olympic Park seems to be burning bright.The successful delivery of the £7-billion worth Olympic infrastructure has raised the public profile of civil engineers and people working in the trades. According to a new survey published by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) over half of the public (53%) no longer just think about bridges when they think of civil engineering in the light of the London 2012 Olympic Games.More than 46,000 jobs were created as a result of the London 2012 construction project. Post-Olympic work, currently taking place, is expected to create thousands of extra new jobs. Nearly half of the 2,000 people who took part in the ComRes survey said they would consider civil engineering to be a ‘respected’ profession, alongside jobs such as lawyers and teachers.

IFC Renews Investment in Zambeef

No Plan to Deal with Fukushima Collapse

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) say they don’t know what to do if Reactor 4 collapses, instead declaring it safe from earthquakes after finding it leaning and with a bulged exterior wall.

The Wall Street Journal reported that TEPCO doesn’t have a plan to deal with the collapse of Spent Fuel Pool 4 at the Fukushima nuclear reactor in Japan. The revelation comes as a US army general warns the entire Northern Hemisphere is at risk of becoming largely uninhabitable if the building collapses, which is a sentiment being echoed by a host of scientists, nuclear experts and researchers.

Architectural aluminium systems specialist, Technal, has announced new thermal performance data for its FXi65 casement window system, which exceed Building Regulations requirements.

The new figures demonstrate that even with a 24mm double glazed unit, a Uw value of 1.4w/m2K can be achieved. This is significantly below Building Regulations requirements but is a specification often requested by architects and contractors.
